Bluebirds sign Tyreke Johnson

Published: at 1:45pm

The midfielder made his Premier League debut in 2018.

Chippenham Town are once again, over the moon to announce that joining up with the squad for the 2023/24 season is another local lad in Tyreke Johnson. Tyreke grew up in nearby Trowbridge and spent his youth career with Watford, then with Swindon. It was from here that Tyreke caught the attention of one of the best youth academies in world football, Southampton. Johnson then did something that not a lot of players get to do. He impressed so much he was given a contract by the Saints and made his professional debut in the Premier League, coming on in a 3-2 victory against Arsenal in 2018.

Tyreke followed his departure from Southampton with spells in the USA and the EFL with Gillingham but ultimately, a shoulder injury derailed his time in the States and after 6 starts for the Gills was allowed to join Woking in the National League where he played some 50+ games for the Cards. He went out on loan at the end of last season and played a pivotal role in Chelmsford City’s successful campaign, culminating in a defeat in the play-offs.

At 24 years old Tyreke was another in high demand with his departure from Woking and manager Gary Horgan had to move quickly to secure his man. Mid-Twenties is often seen as an age of real maturity within the game, particularly at the non-League level and his experiences at Premier League Southampton and National League Woking will be invaluable as Tyreke looks to make his mark in a blue shirt for the mighty, Chippenham Town!
