Junior Academy East Mallorca Cup Day Two

Published: at 10:05pm

A positive day in the sunshine

The teams returned to action well rested after a demanding opening day, with four fixtures (two each) scheduled for Day Two. Weather check; conditions remained windy, though noticeably warmer than on Day One.

Following a varied and much‑needed breakfast, both Bluebirds squads made their way to Centre Esportiu, the host venue for all of the day’s fixtures.

TSV Hartberg 1-0 FC Chippenham Town White

The White team opened Day Two with an early kick‑off against Austrian side TSV Hartberg, producing a competitive and high‑quality contest to begin their tournament campaign.

We started brightly, showing discipline out of possession and patience as they assessed their opposition. Our intelligent pressing created early opportunities, with Jasper and Bobby both forcing strong saves from the Hartberg goalkeeper.

Despite the positive start, it was Hartberg who broke the deadlock. A brief lapse in concentration allowed space for their holding midfielder, who struck from just inside the Chippenham half. The effort caught the crosswind and drifted beyond Freddie A, who was left with little chance.

The Bluebirds’ goalkeeper responded superbly, producing a series of excellent saves to keep us in the game, while Hartberg also struck the crossbar twice before the interval.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with both sides trading attacks in an end‑to‑end spell. Freddie W delivered a vital ten‑minute defensive shift, making several crucial interventions. Jasper and Lucas each carved out chances, but we were unable to find the equaliser their performance deserved.

Despite the narrow defeat, it was an encouraging and hard‑fought opening fixture for the White team.

Player of the Match: Freddy A – stepped up when it mattered most. He delivered 3-4 crucial saves in big moments, showing composure and reliability under pressure.

UD Arenal 1-3 Chippenham Town Blue

Goals: Harry 9′, Isiah 35′, Rowan 45′

Chippenham Town Blue secured their first win of the East Majorca Cup with a disciplined 3-1 victory over UD Arenal.

The Bluebirds began on the front foot, immediately applying pressure to the Arenal back line. Their early dominance was rewarded in the ninth minute when Harry reacted quickest inside the box to guide home the opener. The goal reflected Chippenham’s control of the early stages, with Arenal limited to few clear‑cut opportunities.

Despite this, the hosts levelled on 17 minutes. A free-kick delivered from the Balearians’ half into the Chippenham penalty area was not dealt with, allowing an Arenal forward space to head in the equaliser. The sides went into the interval at 1-1, although we had enjoyed the better of the half.

Chippenham continued to apply pressure after the restart. A defence-splitting through ball released Barney, whose shot was pushed wide by the Arenal goalkeeper. Barney recovered the loose ball and crossed to the far post. Rowan’s header was saved on the line, but Isiah followed up to restore the lead in the 35th minute.

The Bluebirds remained on top and continued to push forward. Alex had a tight‑angled finish ruled out for offside, but the pressure eventually told. The third goal arrived with five minutes remaining when Rowan collected the ball on the edge of the box and placed a low finish into the bottom corner to extend the lead to 3-1.

Arenal pressed in the closing stages, forcing several corners and a late save from Arijus. The rebound was cleared off the line by Harry, completing a strong individual performance at both ends of the pitch.

Chippenham saw out the remaining minutes to confirm a well‑earned victory, built on determination, teamwork, and effective finishing. The match was played in excellent spirit, supported by a lively crowd.

Player of the Match: Harry : Recognised for his early goal, work rate, and crucial late goal‑line clearance.

Juventus 6-0 Chippenham Town Blue

Chippenham Town Blue faced a technically strong and physically dominant Juventus side in their second fixture  and, despite a committed performance, were defeated 6-0.

Juventus began sharply, moving the ball quickly across both wings and controlling the early stages whilst Chippenham were slow to settle, and the Italians capitalised with two early goals.

The Bluebirds were limited to long‑range efforts but worked hard to stay organised for the remainder of the half, going into the interval 3-0 down.

Following an encouraging half‑time team talk, Chippenham started the second half with renewed energy and matched Juventus for intensity and believed they had reduced the deficit, but the effort was ruled out for offside.

As the match entered its closing stages, fatigue set in and lapses in concentration allowed Juventus to extend their lead further.

Although the first‑half performance fell below par, the players responded well after the break and can take confidence from their overall effort against a high‑quality European outfit.

Player of the Match: Barney –  an absolute wall in 1v1 situations, while simultaneously providing the team with a potent creative spark and attacking threat in possession.

Porto Cristo 0-4 Chippenham Town White

Scorers: Lucas (2), Bobby, Jude

Chippenham Town White produced a composed and clinical performance in the Balearic sunshine, earning a 4-0 victory over Porto Cristo in a match where their quality in both penalty areas proved decisive.

The Bluebirds settled quickest, controlling possession in the early stages, even if clear chances were initially limited. Lucas came close to opening the scoring when he drove into the box and fired across the goalkeeper, the effort skimming just wide of the far post. Moments later, Jasper struck powerfully from distance, his effort going in off of the upright..

The breakthrough arrived soon after. Lucas struck from the edge of the area, and a slight deflection wrong‑footed the goalkeeper, guiding the ball into the bottom corner for 1-0.

As half-time approached, Lucas doubled the lead with an excellent individual run, drifting past three defenders before finishing across the keeper into the far corner to give Chippenham a strong platform at the interval.

Porto Cristo emerged with renewed intent after the restart and enjoyed their best spell of the match. A series of chances forced goalkeeper Freddie into an impressive double save, before he reacted quickly to smother the loose ball and deny the hosts a route back into the game.

Chippenham responded well, with Jackson testing the home goalkeeper from the edge of the box. The Bluebirds regained control, and their pressure told when Jasper beat the right‑back and delivered a precise low cross from the byline for Bobby to guide home, extending the lead to 3-0.

Lucas continued to trouble the defence, forcing another save that resulted in a corner, although the set piece came to nothing.

Chippenham added a fourth late on. Jude collected the ball inside the Porto Cristo half, drifted past two defenders, and calmly placed his finish into the bottom corner to complete a confident and disciplined team performance.

Player of the Match: Lucas – made the most of his opportunities, scoring twice and looking dangerous throughout. His movement and finishing made him a constant threat.

After another demanding day in the Balearics, the squad had a recovery session scheduled for the early evening ahead of dinner. Originally planned to take place in the pool, the session was quickly reconsidered after several brave attempts, from players and parents alike, revealed the water to be closer to an ice bath than a leisure swim.

With the pool deemed unworkable, the group instead enjoyed a light‑hearted recovery period, filled with laughter and team spirit, the most effective form of recovery available.

Keep up the fantastic work boys! 💙
