MATCH PREVIEW: Chippenham Town vs Enfield Town | National League South | Saturday 7th March
Teejan Sowe previews the visit of Enfield.
Our first match in March happens this weekend as we welcome Enfield into town for an important clash with a massive three points on the line for both teams.
The Opposition
Enfield Town are a relatively new club founded in 2001. Their creation came from the split between them and Enfield FC. The reason for the split was down to fan disagreement. The new club is now known for being the Country’s first fan owned club.
Their first season started in Essex Senior League in which they finished runners-up and following that up, in the season after, they won the league commencing the start of a new era for Enfield Town. They would go on to win many more trophies and have great success before being promoted in 2005 to the Southern League (East).
They would go on to finish in a play-off spot and ultimately lose in them. The following year after moving to the Ryman League their bad luck in the play-offs followed them too and they would lose again after finishing 3rd.
Eventually in 2011, they got promoted through the play-offs after finishing runners-up. Their 2013/14 season in the new division was a close call as they guaranteed safety on the final day after a 2-1 win against Cray Wanderers.
Fast forward to the 2021/22 season, they had one of their most memorable seasons to date after making it to the 3rd round of the FA Trophy which was not achieved until then by Enfield before. They also finished 3rd in the Isthmian Premier Division, unfortunately losing in the play-offs again.
The 2023/24 season ended up being a fan favourite as they were promoted to the National League South, in which they currently sit 23rd, after winning the play-off final against Chatham Town 1-0.
Fixture History
The Bluebirds have only faced Enfield 3 times in history with The Bluebirds getting the upper hand on Enfield on 1 of the 3 games with the others finishing in a 0-0 draw and a 1-0 win for Enfield.
Chippenham will look to improve on our decent run of form against Enfield as it is a huge game for both teams as they are lurking towards the bottom of the table.
The most recent game happened earlier this season with the score ending in Enfield’s favour. It finished a 1-0 win for Enfield after Henry Hawkins got the winner.
Dangermen
Lamar Reynolds – an experienced Striker who has bagged 8 goals in 30 games this season. Signed from Greenock Morton FC on a free in the summer seems like it has been a shrewd bit of business and has been one of the best players for Enfield this season.
Henry Hawkins – a young and powerful centre back who is deadly from corners and crosses. He scored against the Bluebirds earlier in the season, so he will be one to watch out for. He might not be the top scorer, but he’s a player of the clutch moment.
