MATCH PREVIEW: Chippenham Town vs Welling United | National League South | Tuesday 28th March 2023

Published: at 9:26am

Sam Hart previews our home game against Welling United.

The Bluebirds are back in action this evening against Welling United. Chippenham will be looking to maintain their stunning unbeaten run and extend it to 13 games undefeated and a 6th win in the unbeaten period. This run of form sees Horgan’s men fly up to 14th in the league table, despite being in the relegation zone only a few weeks back. Now, they sit on 47 points and 8 above the relegation zone with a game in hand on the majority of teams below. The boys in blue will look to continue flying up the table with achieving as higher place as possible in their sights. Along with their wins, Chippenham have also started scoring more goals in recent weeks with firepower from Alex Bray, Joe Parker, Craig Fasanmade, Owen Windsor and Matt McClure boosting The Bluebirds further up the table.

About the Opposition

Welling United have had a torrid time in recent weeks. However, they finally broke their 8 game winless run as they beat Bath City 1-0 thanks to Kodi Lyons-Foster’s strike in the 82nd minute. Welling have fallen down the table, currently sitting in 15th just below The Bluebirds.

Welling United gained their place in the Conference Premier after Jamie Day’s team set a new Conference South league record of 12 consecutive wins and overcame a 10 point deficit by runaway leaders Salisbury City to win the league by four clear points back in the 2012/13 season. However, 2 seasons later, they fell back into the National League South.

Welling have been deducted 1 point this season for playing an ineligible player and additionally have been fined £750.

Ones to Watch

Adebayo Azeez appears on the list once again for the Wings, and for good reason. Azeez has netted 14 goals for Welling this season including a hat trick against Oxford City.

Azeez started his career at Charlton, rising through the youth ranks. He managed to gain a professional contract with the Addicks but never made an appearance for them. During the two year period at Charlton, he went on loan to Wycombe Wanderers, Leyton Orient, Torquay and Dagenham & Redbridge where he made 29 total appearances. AFC Wimbledon picked him up and Azeez spent 2 years at the London outfit racking up 85 appearances and scoring 12. He then moved to Scotland for a season where he completed 38 games for Partick Thistle. Cambridge was his next destination followed by a loan move to Dover. Welsh side Newport County then picked up the forward and he was loaned back to Torquay. The following season he moved to Dover however, his move to Dartford was a success as he played 36 and scored 11. He’s now with the Wings and is their current top goalscorer this season in the National League south. It looks like he’s finally found his feet at Welling and will be looking to kick on for the Wings.
