MATCH PREVIEW: Chippenham Town vs Westbury | Tuesday 9th December | Wiltshire Premier Shield

Published: at 12:00pm

We play our first match of the season’s competition

CTFC take on our first Wiltshire Premier Shield match of the season, as we host Southern League South Division One side Westbury United in the Quarter-Final.

The opposition

Westbury FC were officially founded in 1920, and spent many of their early years in the Wiltshire County divisions, and became Westbury United following a merger with Westbury Great Western Railway XI. They reached the FA Cup First Round in the inter-war years, and lost against Walthamstow Avenue in 1938.

Their rise into the footballing pyramid first came in 1984 as they joined the Western League Frist Division, in which they won in 1992.

They continued to bounce around the Western League Premier and First Divisions until 2021, where they were moved into the Hellenic Divisions, in which they were promoted at the first time of asking thanks to points per game.

The White Horse Men (named after the chalk horse in Westbury) are in their fourth Southern League season having finished 10th, 17th and 13th in recent years.

They currently sit in 7th, ten points away from the playoff positions, in what is a very strong Southern League Division One South.

Fixture History

Ourselves and Westbury would have played each other many a time over the years, and this is the latest edition. We have knocked the White Horse Men out of the FA Cup six times in total, most recently in 1969.

Competition History

We have won the Wiltshire Premier Shield a total of nine times in our club’s history first in 1966, and most recently in 2024.

CTFC celebrate our 2024 triumph

Our 2024 title started with a match against Swindon Town that the Robins withdrew from earning us an immediate route into the semi-final, against this season’s first opponents Westbury.

Chippenham took the lead on a chilly night in SN14 thanks to Craig Fasanmade but faltered to 3-1 as Chippenham loanees Jasper Jones and Bevan Cross added to Charlei Walton’s goal. We equalised with two late goals from Caine Bradbury.

Alex Avenell was our hero during the penalty shootout as he saved during the shootout to let us progress to the final against Swindon Supermarine.

In the final held at the County Ground, Supermarine ran into a 3-1 lead thanks to two from Michael Fernandes and one from Zak Kotwica giving us work to do despite Darren McAllistair’s goal. Bradbury got us back into it, before Leighton Tuodolo equalised. To win it, Trowbridge born Tyreke Johnson thundered one into the top corner.
