MATCH REPORT: AFC Totton 1-1 Chippenham Town | Tuesday 30th December | National League South
Haines strikes as resilient Bluebirds earn deserved point at Totton
We battled from a goal down to earn a -merited 1–1 draw away at AFC Totton, with Luke Haines’ late equaliser capping a strong second-half display from the Bluebirds that could have merited more.
In a cagey opening period, chances arrived for both sides. Harry Parsons was played through one-on-one inside the first ten minutes but couldn’t quite keep his effort on target, while Tom Mehew went into the book shortly after as the tempo of the game increased.
We continued to threaten, with efforts from Ethan Vaughan and Billy Phillips testing the home defence, and Mehew volleying narrowly wide in one of the best openings of the half. Despite the Bluebirds’ promising moments, the sides went into the break goalless.
The second half began with further intent from Chippenham as Phillips saw an effort deflected soon after the restart. Haines then glanced a header just wide from a well-worked free-kick routine before Totton took the lead against the run of play on 68 minutes as Tony Lee scored following a scrappy piece of play.
Sol Wanjau-Smith broke free on the right and flashed the ball across goal, with Chukwu inches away from converting, and moments later substitutions injected fresh energy into the visitors’ attack. The pressure finally told on 77 minutes when Haines reacted quickest inside the box, stretching out a toe to prod the ball beyond Knightbridge and level the match.
From there it was almost one-way traffic. Chukwu went close with a curling effort, Owen-Evans had a goal-bound shot cleared off the line, and Vaughan struck the side netting in the final seconds as Chippenham pushed hard for a winner.
In the end, the Bluebirds had to settle for a point, the performance merited more. Next up we travel to Totton.
