The Bluebirds returned to the fringes of the play-offs with a hard-fought but deserved victory against a side who only need a single point to ensure their own place in the top seven.

A solid defensive effort and a fine goal from Alex Bray saw the home side move up to eighth in the table.

The Bluebirds forced two early fruitless corners.

On seven minutes the Bluebirds lost possession in their own half and Oxford seized the opportunity for Joe Iaciofano to shoot but Will Henry pulled off a fine save.

A minute later Iaciofano had the ball in the net but the effort was ruled out for offside.

On eleven minutes Bray found Jordan Young and his good run ended with him shooting over.

A minute later Alfie Santos’s cross saw Luke Russe head straight at Ben Dudzinski.

A long clearance then found Santos whose shot was well-tipped over the bar by Dudzinski.

As the Bluebirds continued to take the game to their visitors a seventeenth minute Joe Hanks corner saw Will Richards’s headed effort hit a defender, whilst a Danny Greenslade cross was headed over by Young.

On twenty five minutes Bray picked out Tom Mehew whose low shot went wide.

Three minutes later the Hoops went close as George Harmon’s cross saw Elliot Benyon’s shot hit the bar.

Young’s thirty yard snap shot then went just wide, whilst a Bluebird free kick ended with Kieran Parselle shooting over.

A good run from Zak McEachran saw him fire over as the half drew to a close.

Chippenham scored the decisive goal two minutes into the break as the Hoops defence backed off from Bray who cracked home a fine individual goal.

A high ball into the Chippenham box saw Henry and Iaciofano both go for the ball with the Oxford player looping a header over the bar.

Bray then found Santos whose shot skimmed the bar and on seventy seven minutes a thirty yard effort from Santos slammed against the bar.
