MATCH REPORT: Chippenham Town 1-2 Farnborough | National League South | Saturday 10th August 2024

Published: at 5:14pm

The Bluebirds went down to a narrow opening day defeat against an experienced and robust Farnborough.

The opening half hour was fairly tame as Boro’s Reggie Young dragged a low shot wide whilst at the other end Rex Mannings was also off target.

Mason Bloomfield’s low cross deflected off a defender and into Will Henry’s arms.

Whilst on twenty five minutes Olly Pendlebury’s 25 yard effort was straight at Henry.

On thirty three minutes the Bluebirds almost opened the scoring as Matt McClure’s header hit the inside of a post and rolled across the goal line.

McClure reacted quickest to the loose ball but from a very narrow angle he could only hit the opposite post.

A minute later Lewis Colwell shot wide.

The Hampshire side relied heavily on Guy Hollis’s long throws and from one such effort fellow centre back Ollie Robinson headed wide.

On thirty nine minutes Harry Parsons found Mannings who shot wide.

Boro opened the scoring three minutes before the break when Ricky Holmes cut in from the left and hit a superb right-footed curling effort across Henry and into the far corner.

Before the break another Hollis throw saw Henry hold Robinson’s header on the line.

HALF TIME: Chippenham Town 0-1 Farnborough

The visitors doubled their lead at the start of the second half as a short goal kick routine went wrong and Holmes capitalised for his and Farnborough’s second.

Parsons was unable to get clean contact on a cross and his headed effort was off target. In the scorching heat both sides used the new regulations to introduce four substitutions and it was the Bluebirds who looked by far the stronger team.

Tom Owen-Evans pulled a goal back two minutes from time after just coming off the bench.

His fierce shot saw keeper Jack Turner get a hand to the ball but it looped over his head and into the net. Six minutes of stoppage time saw two free kicks for the home side from promising positions.

The first came to nothing but the second rebounded off the wall to substitute Tyreke Johnson but he skied his shot over the bar.
