MATCH REPORT: Chippenham Town 3-2 Welling United | National League South | Tuesday 28th March

Published: at 12:27pm

Thirteen did not prove unlucky as the Bluebirds extended their unbeaten run with a narrow victory over their physical visitors. In a thrilling game the margin of victory was narrow but if a couple of refereeing decisions had not gone against the home side things could have proved more comfortable.

Chippenham again started a match slowly as Dylan Gavin’s sixth minute shot went across goal and past a post.

The Wings opened the scoring three minutes later as a cross from the right went beyond the far post for Taylor Maloney to fire home.

On the quarter hour mark Joe Parker was set free and scored with an angled shot.

Midway through the half a Chippenham breakaway saw Owen Windsor in on goal but he fired over.

Chippenham took the lead on twenty five minutes as Tom Mehew set up Matt McClure in the area and he jinked around the Wings’ defence to score.

Before the break a Welling cross went across the area with no player on hand to convert.

Parker then found McClure who shot just wide.

A Windsor free kick then saw Will Richards climb high but head wide.

HALF TIME: Chippenham Town 2-1 Welling United

After the break a Mehew free kick saw McClure just unable to convert.

Welling were awarded a fifty fourth minute penalty as Spencer Hamilton slipped on the greasy surface and Chi Ezennolm fired an attempted cross straight at him from a yard away and the ball struck the skipper’s hand for a harsh spot kick that was converted by Maloney.

A minute later substitute Ed Williams was just off target with a shot.

On sixty four minutes a Wings corner was not cleared properly and the ball was returned to Gavin who shot just wide.

The winning goal came eight minutes later as the ball was moved left to Williams who fired home his first goal in a Bluebird shirt.

As Welling hit long balls forward looking for an equalizer Chippenham were able to hit their opponents on the break.

Six minutes from time Parker was set free on the right he cut inside but his low shot was saved by Yusuf Mersin.

A minute later Jamie Sendles-White was fortunate to escape any punishment when he appeared to elbow Windsor in the face.

Luke Russe then saw a shot saved whilst in stoppage time a Welling free kick was headed wide.
