The Wings recorded a league double over the Bluebirds, it was their first victory at home in the league since November 2021.
Chippenham had created several good chances but luck was not on their side as they remained inside the play-off places as every side between fifth and eleventh (apart from Hungerford who did not play) lost.
The first chance fell to Welling‘s Dipo Akinyemi on two minutes but he shot off target. A minute later a Bluebird corner saw Alfie Santos’s effort blocked.
On five minutes the Wings had an unsuccessful shout for a penalty after Chi Ezennolim’s shot appeared to hit Will Richards’ hand.
On eleven minutes Danny Parish’s shot from distance was off target. Midway through the half Olu Lawal did well to find Alex Bray in the area but his shot from a tight angle saw Jack Sims get a hand to the ball.
Just before the half hour Lawal did well to pinch the ball off Olumide Durojaiye but his shot bounced into the arms of Sims.
Three minutes before the interval Welling had a good opportunity as the ball fell to Akinyemi but from close in he shot straight at Will Henry. A minute later Luke Russe saw his shot blocked.
Welling took the lead on fifty two minutes as Ade Shokunbi took advantage of a mistake to slot home after good work from Akinyemi. On the hour mark Santos’s effort from distance was off target. Lawal then hit the side netting from close in.
On seventy minutes Jordan Young’s shot locked the power to beat Sims and two minutes later another Young effort went wide. Five minutes from time a Chippenham corner was not dealt with and Luke Russe’s cross appeared to be handled but play was allowed to continue and a Wings breakaway saw Akinyemi’s shot saved.
Bradley Stevenson then saw his shot blocked by Henry and his follow-up blocked on the line by substitute Danny Greenslade.
In the final minute of normal time substitute Joe Hanks appeared to be brought down in the area but no penalty was awarded. In stoppage time Young’s cross saw the unmarked Bray head over from close range.
