MATCH REPORT: Weston-super-Mare 2-1 Chippenham Town | National League South | Tuesday 9th April 2024

Published: at 10:00am

Chippenham Town’s unbeaten six match run came to an end in Somerset as the home side came from behind, winning with goals in the final minute of each half with the latter a last minute penalty, at the same time recording a league double over the Bluebirds.

Chippenham were the first to show on two minutes as Tom Owen-Evans found Luke Spokes whose shot was blocked.

This resulted in the Seagulls breaking clear through Bailey Kempster and ending with James Dodd shooting wide.

On nine minutes Alex Bray and Spokes combined to present Owen-Evans with a shooting opportunity but his effort went over the bar.

A minute later Luke Haines’ long-range shot had Max Harris scampering across his goal to save.

On the quarter hour the Seagulls Robbie Wilmott shot over whilst a free kick from the same player saw Kieran Thomas’ diving header go wide.

Chippenham took the lead on twenty minutes as Owen-Evans’ fierce shot from an angle found the corner of the net.

Harris then pulled off another fine save from Craig Fasanmade whilst at the other end Will Henry blocked Lloyd Humphries shot with his legs and also repelled the follow-up effort.

Bray’s cross saw Fasanmade’s effort go wide whilst a minute before the break Humphries free kick was tipped over by Henry.

The home side then won two successive corners and the latter in the final minute of the half saw Wilmott’s effort catch in the wind with Weston players claiming it had blown over the line.

Referee Neil Pratt was not convinced and play continued until an assistant called Pratt over and the decision was to award a goal.

Early in the second half Will King’s shot was blocked as was an effort from Fasanmade.

On fifty five minutes Humphries shot was blocked by his own player – Rueben Reid as Weston continued to apply the pressure Callum Wood’s long range shot was off target.

On sixty three minutes Chippenham appeals for a penalty after Bray was felled in the area went unanswered.

Humphries then saw a shot blocked whilst Kempster hit the side netting.

On eighty two minutes Nat Williams blocked a shot from Wilmott whilst four minutes later the Weston goal somehow managed to survive as four successive efforts from substitutes Ed William, Matt McClure and Aaron Amadi Holloway and Owen-Evans were all blocked by a combination of Harris and his defence.

It was to prove decisive as in the final minute Thomas was fouled in the area by Owen-Evans and Reid converted the resulting penalty.
