MATCH REPORT: Chippenham Town 1-1 Welling United | National League South | Saturday 22nd February 2025

Published: at 1:21pm

A match of two halves which saw Chippenham in ascendency in the opening half and the Wings in the second fittingly ended as a draw.

The Bluebirds forced two early fruitless corners before they took the lead on eleven minutes when Freddie Grant’s shot from the edge of the area was deflected behind off a Welling arm, but despite vociferous appeals no penalty ensued.

Justice was done as the resulting Luke Spokes corner was played back across the area for Hamzad Kargbo to tap home.

Eight minutes later a Chippenham breakaway ended with Caine Bradbury finding Tom Mehew but he shot straight at Rhys Lovett.

Welling then came back into the game and only a timely tackle by Luke Haines on debutant Scott Kashket denied the Wings player a shot at an empty net.

Welling equalised on twenty five minutes as Harvey Walker’s free kick deceived the home defence and skipper Dave Winfield tapped home.

Will Henry was then forced to leave his area to block tackle James Alabi who was otherwise clean through on goal.

Before the break Kargbo’s shot was deflected behind and Spokes’ in swinging corner hit the bar.

In stoppage time Matt McClure controlled the ball well before his shot on the turn went across the face of goal.

The second half saw Welling do most of the attacking but they could not find a way through the Bluebirds’ defence.

However, Chippenham did have several chances to take the lead, the first on fifty two minutes saw Mehew’s shot following a corner blocked.

At the other end Jayden Davis’ rising shot cleared the bar.

Midway through the half Bradbury was unable to get his shot on target whilst the best chance on seventy seven minutes again fell to Mehew after a defensive mistake left him with only Lovett to beat but he dragged his shot wide.
