MATCH REPORT: Gloucester City AFC 1-2 Chippenham Town | FA Cup | Saturday 13th September
We leave it late, but earn a deserved place in the next round.
A late goal from Tom Owen-Evans, completed a cup comeback in Gloucestershire.
The match started livley, with the hosts having a chance in the opening two minutes headed over following a long throw.
Just five minutes later, thanks to another long throw-in’s flick on, Gloucester netted through to Ellis Watts.
Our biggest first half chance came courtesy of Tom Mehew after he was put through by Quevin Castro. Mehew’s shot was well saved from close range by former bluebird Jared Thompson in Gloucester’s goal.
On 39 minutes Mehew would have another chance. Following pinball in the penalty box, it would fall to our number 4 , and his volley was just over the crossbar.
The first half would soon hit a flashpoint, as Owen-Evans reached for a ball via Henry Sady. Owen-Evans was challenged harshly, and to the bemusement of all in Chippenham’s camp, just a goal kick was signalled. Owen-Evans and Castro were cautioned for their protestations, and the referee’s whistle brought an end to a tense few minutes.
Half-time: Gloucester City 1-0 Chippenham Town
We had the lion’s share of the ball in the second 45, and within the opening minutes Owen-Evans chipped for Sady which was well defended by the hosts.
Another significant chance would not fall our way until the 70th minute, and it was significant indeed. Ethan Vaughan crossed for freshly introduced substitute Ezio Touray’s, whose close range header powered into the net. That goal not only sparked the comeback but also marks Touray’s first in competitive action for us.
Gloucester aimed for a rebuttal to their set back but Watts’ shot was narrowly wide.
Toruay would be quick into action again, as a slide rule pass from Sol Wanjai-Smith put our number 11 through, but his strike was deflected onto the woodwork. It seemed a replay was destined.
In the final of six added minutes, a goal kick from Will Henry would change it all. His long kick was well held up by Touray, and after some intricate play, Vaughan’s cross was turned in by the head of Tom Owen-Evans. Cue CTFC pandemonium.
The draw for the next round will take place on Monday 15th September at 1.00pm
